Employee: If you have a job with a boss, you need to think about whether your boss is asking you to do a set of tasks because if your boss is, they’re going to try and find someone cheaper than you to do them. Or is your boss asking you to solve interesting problems? If this is the case, now you have your work cut out for you and you have an opportunity.

Freelancer: Someone who gets paid for working; the more you work, the more you get paid.

Entrepreneur: Gets paid while they sleep; they build a business bigger than themselves and get paid even when they’re not there.

I’ve done the first, I’m doing the second, I want the third.

So I went on a foursquare bender. I’d let my Check In’s languish, but last week I achieved a new seven day high: 324 http://campl.us/isuW. Honestly it was just a fun way to pass the time while waiting in lines at Universal Studios. That got me wondering how many of us actively use Foursquare and what for? Coupons and offers -I got a free appetizer at Chili’s the other day- or to see what/where friends are up to? Just curious. I know more than a few friends have dropped their use of it entirely. So what’s your take on the Check In today?

A Game Worth Playing

What is it about a game that is so enthralling? Why do people spend so much time and effort playing games? Well, there are many answers to that question but there is one that has a profound lesson for leaders, entrepreneurs, and managers. People enjoy games because there is a clear objective; they know what is expected of them and what is required to win. Imagine a game where there were no rules and no clear way of winning. How much would you enjoy a game like that? Imagine trying to get your friends excited about playing. You would probably get some very strange looks and some questions like:

“Sooo, what are we supposed to be doing?”

“How do we know if we are winning?”

“What’s the point?”

Eventually they will probably walk away from the game shaking their heads
